Two Emporians are among nearly 30 people appointed to a state committee designed to help with the upcoming 2020 Census.
Emporia City Commissioner Rob Gilligan, a governmental relations specialist with the Kansas Association of School Boards, and Emporia Public Library Director Robin Newell are now part of the Kansas Complete Count Committee, which is designed to promote and advertise the upcoming population count. Part of the committee’s mission is to coordinate responses to questions, provide available resources for “hard-to-count” populations and work to develop the highest participation rate possible.
Governor Laura Kelly says the census is important because of available federal funding, but it’s also important for planning at the local and state levels.
The US Constitution mandates a census every 10 years. The 2020 Census begins April 1.
