A Madison man drowned Tuesday afternoon while fly fishing in western Wyoming.
The Jackson Hole News and Guide reports 70-year-old Mark Osmondson of Madison was fishing on the Greys River, 16 miles upriver from the city of Alpine Wyoming Tuesday when he slipped and his waders filled up with water. Osmondson’s body was reportedly recovered nearly 2 miles down the river.
Lincoln County, WY, Sheriff Shane Johnson tells JH News and Guide Osmondson was fishing with the grandson of a longtime friend when the accident occurred. He says Osmondson’s partner “did try to help and even had his hand at one point.” Johnson adds, “this isn’t the first time we’ve had a drowning like this, it can be a very dangerous place. People underestimate the strength of the water and its ability to pull you under.”
The JH News and Guide article indicates Lincoln County Deputies do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident. A formal news release is currently pending.
