Repairs to the Huey helicopter at the All Veteran’s Memorial will soon be getting underway.
Local veteran Frank Lowery tells KVOE News they have ordered replacement windows for those damaged on the helicopter earlier this month in an act of vandalism. Lowery anticipates those should arrive in the next few weeks at which time work will begin.
The repairs are necessary after a large hole was discovered in the back left window of the helicopter as veterans were placing flags on the Fourth of July. In addition, veterans later discovered damage to the pilot’s fuselage window from a separate vandalism incident.
Lowery says the original fundraising goal was for $2,500 however, he says they were hoping to reach $5,000. Thankfully, due to the generosity of the Emporia community and donations from local businesses, they not only reached both goals but exceeded them as well.
Lowery says he does not have an exact fundraising total on hand as donations are continuing to trickle in each day. Folks wanting to donate can mail checks to the All Veterans Memorial Association at Post Office Box 1632 in Emporia. People wanting to donate cash can call Ron Whitney at 343-3247.
Police are investigating the vandalism. No suspect information has been divulged. If you have information, call Police at 343-4200 or Lyon County Crime Stoppers at 342-2273. You can also use www.p3tips.com or the P3Tips mobile app.
