10:30 am Wednesday: Repairs to water line near Sixth and Garfield led to nearby gas line puncture
Repairs are underway after a gas line was punctured in west-central Emporia on Wednesday morning.
Underground Utilities Supervisor Mike Dvorak says a crew was in the process of repairing a 6-inch water line leak near the intersection of Sixth and Garfield when it hit and punctured a gas line. The city had called Dig Safe first before starting the excavation process.
Kansas Gas has continued excavating. Garfield is currently blocked between Sixth and Seventh for thru traffic, and it may remain at least partially closed through early afternoon. No evacuations were needed, so residents and nearby businesses can continue normal operations aside from the traffic flow.
Dvorak says Underground Utilities will continue its work on the water pipe once the gas line is fixed.
Separately, Underground Utilities has repaired a water line in the 300 block of Sherman after it was reported as offline Tuesday night.
