Brief heavy rain and isolated severe weather marked thunderstorm activity in the KVOE listening area Sunday night.
Here at the KVOE studios, we received 0.35 inches of rain from storms that moved south across the area during the evening hours. Other totals:
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 0.21 inches
*East Emporia: 0.20 inches
*Allen: 0.15 inches
*Cottonwood Falls: 0.70 inches
*Madison: 1.1 inches
The rain caused no significant rises in any area rivers — a concern after five separate rounds of flooding since late April.
Meanwhile, storms that developed near Reading early in the evening later generated wind gusts of 70 mph just west of BETO Junction and 65 mph near New Strawn with some small tree limbs downed. Nickel-size hail was reported just west of Osage City.
The storm activity ended a four-day heat wave that saw air temperatures in the upper 90s and heat index readings from 107 to 109 in Emporia and as high as 111 in Melvern to close out last week. Much cooler conditions are expected to start this week with high temperatures in the low to mid-80s, and we may not see 90 degrees again until the weekend.
