Excessive heat warnings have been extended for most of the KVOE listening area, but relief is expected before the end of the day.
Saturday, the National Weather Service extended excessive heat warnings for much of eastern Kansas. The warning in place since Wednesday will end at 7:00 pm Sunday for Chase, Coffey, and Greenwood counties. Lyon and Osage are no longer in an excessive heat warning.
Air temperatures Sunday will climb to the low 90s in Emporia with heat index readings of 100 degrees. Saturday’s high was 96 with a peak heat index of 108, down slightly from the forecast high of 99 and heat index as high as 112.
In the warned counties stated above, high temperatures will reach the mid-90s and will combine with humid conditions to bring afternoon heat index values into the 102 to 105-degree range.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected Sunday. although the evening chances have increased to 80 percent while the afternoon chances have diminished. There is a slight risk of all severe weather hazards including tornadoes, hail, and high winds around 60 mph if storms develop as expected.
