Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope is urging adults to make sure they don’t leave children or pets in vehicles at any point in time this summer.
Cope’s advisory came Saturday, one day after a mother accidentally locked her young daughter in a car in the 3000 block of Road L Friday night. Cope says deputies were alerted to the situation just before 8 pm.
The child suffered no medical issues afterward, and Cope says several things happened on the way to a happy ending. The mother called 911 immediately and both deputies and Flint Hills Towing were nearby. All parties were also in constant contact during the incident.
Cope says deputies and Flint Hills Towing did not have to break the window glass to get the child out of the car. Air temperatures were around 90 with a heat index of 99 when the incident happened.

One child was rescued from a locked car situation in north Lyon County on what has been the steamiest day of our heat wave to date.
The Lyon County Emergency Communication Center says it received a report about the child, who had apparently locked himself in a car that wasn’t running at an unspecified location Friday. A deputy and Flint Hills Towing responded and freed the child, who was unhurt.
Additional details are pending through the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
Friday’s high was 96 with a heat index of 109 in Emporia. The heat index was the worst so far in town after a 108 heat index reading Wednesday and 107 Thursday. Air temperatures hit 97 both Wednesday and Thursday in Emporia.
The Saturday forecast now says we could have an air temperature of 99 with a heat index as high as 112.
This is the last day for an excessive heat warning, which has been in place areawide since Wednesday. Temperatures will now be in the low 90s for Sunday, along with a marginal risk for severe weather. Temperatures will be in the low- to mid-80s Monday through Wednesday.
