Discussions on repairs to the All Veterans Memorial helicopter are coming this week.
Local veteran Frank Lowery tells KVOE News there will be a meeting between local veterans and a certified installer after veterans discovered two separate vandalism incidents as they began unfurling flags for the Fourth of July, one involving the back left window and one involving the pilot fuselage window. Lowery says he’s relieved that things are falling into place at this time.
Total repair costs will likely exceed $5,000, and Lowery says the certified installer will handle both projects before Veterans Day. Lowery thanked the community for its donations and can-do spirit as the vandalisms came to light.
To donate, mail checks to the All Veterans Memorial Association at Post Office Box 1632 in Emporia or take them to the American Legion Post 5 at 2921 West 12th. People wanting to donate cash can call Ron Whitney at 343-3247. A fundraising total is not immediately available.
Emporia Police officers continue their investigation, and Lowery encouraged people with information to call Police at 343-4200 or Lyon County Crime Stoppers at 342-2273. You can also submit tips through www.p3tips.com or the P3Tips mobile app.
