A pair of fires destroyed a home in Miller.
The first fire at 3265 Main was reported around 10:45 pm Monday and caused heavy damage to the back of the home. Miller Fire Chief Jason Gibson tells KVOE News the fire apparently started in or near a bathroom in the rear of the house and was already up the west wall when firefighters arrived a few minutes later.
Firefighters thought they had the fire close to out but discovered a second roof had been built on top of the original one. The second roof collapsed overnight, making the whole structure unsafe, and also trapped some of the fire for several hours before it became visible again around 9:45 am Tuesday. Firefighters decided to let the fire burn out and contain it to the house, keeping it away from a nearby garage, vehicles and propane tanks, after it redeveloped.
Thankfully, all inside were able to get out safely during the initial fire.
Gibson says firefighters dumped around 25,000 gallons of water on the first fire. In all, firefighters from Miller and Reading spent close to 12 hours either fighting or monitoring this fire.
Jason DeWitt owns the home, which was built in 1880, according to Lyon County records.
