The Kansas City Royals held on for a 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox Monday night.
The Royals scored 2 runs in the 4th inning on a Hunter Dozier double and Cheslor Cuthbert single.
They added a single run in the 6th inning on a Nicky Lopez single. The Royals scored in the 7th when Billy Hamilton scored on a Alex Gordon ground out. They added a run in the 8th inning on an error.
Chicago scored runs in the 6th and 8th innings but stranded 10 base runners. The White Sox had the bases loaded in the 9th, a double play ended the game.
Jakob Junis was the winning pitcher going 7 innings giving up 1 run on 5 hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts.
The Royals and White Sox play again Tuesday night with Glenn Sparkman making the start for the Royals. First pitch is set for 7:15p. The game will be broadcast on KVOE 1400AM/96.9FM.
The Royals traded catcher Martin Maldonado to the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Mike Montgomery. Montgomery was a 2008 2nd round draft pick of the Royals. He was part of the trade with Tampa Bay for James Shields and Wade Davis. Montgomery is scheduled to be the starter in Fridays game at Cleveland.
