The Emporia Junior American Legion baseball team will have to work their way thru the consolation bracket to advance to state. The Post 5 Juniors were out scored by Garnett 17-16 in 9 innings in game 1 of Zone Tournament play Saturday.
Emporia had a 8-3 lead after 4 innings. Garnett took advantage several errors to score 8 runs in the 5th to take a 11-8 lead. Post 5 answered with 6 runs in the bottom of the 5th to take a 14-11 lead. Garnett tied the game at 16 in the 7th inning and scored the winning run in the 9th. Emporia Coach Cory Shovick said not making the easy plays cost them.
The Post 5 Juniors will play Chanute Sunday morning at 11 in an elimination game.
Chanute opened with a win over Ottawa and then lost to Iola.
Also on Sundays schedule, Ottawa will play Garnett at 1pm.
In their second game Saturday Garnett was defeated by the Kansas Senators.
The two winners of Sundays games will play at 3pm.
Iola and the Kansas Senators will play Monday in the first championship game.
The top 2 teams will advance to the A Legion State Tournament.
