Drivers are needed to assist the North Central Flinthills Area Agency on Aging RSVP program.
RSVP is the largest volunteer network in the nation boasting over 300,000 volunteers in total. The program matches volunteers with local organizations throughout Lyon County including the area agency on aging.
North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging RSVP coordinator Nikki Metz says they currently are in need of drivers for Friendship Meal deliveries. She says while they are in need of regular volunteers, the greatest need is for backup drivers.
According to Metz, there are 12 different routes, meaning there is a need for 12 volunteers per day Monday-Friday. Deliveries usually take between 30-45 minutes and the Friendship Center delivers over 125 meals daily in Emporia.
Friendship Meals is a program through Meals on Wheels and is funded through the Older Americans Act. Drivers also do much more than simply drop off a meal to residents, as according to Metz, drivers also build relationships with individuals and provide a daily wellness check.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer driver or would like to request a meal, contact the Friendship Center by calling 340-8001. There is a suggested donation for meals of $3.50 or whatever the recipient can comfortably afford to give.
