Fireworks are now available for sale in Emporia.
The annual sale and discharge period started at 10 am. On KVOE’s Morning Show this week, Emporia Fire Marshal Reason Bradford said some fireworks are allowed and others aren’t.
Bradford said nothing has changed in the city ordinance, so things are status quo for both residents and vendors.
Bradford also had standard fireworks tips: monitor children when they are around explosives, don’t light fireworks while holding them in hand, stay away from alcohol and make sure they are completely out by soaking them in water.
The city ordinance says fireworks may not be discharged in city streets. Fireworks also are not allowed in parks, the Emporia Golf Course, any city-owned parking lots or recreational fields, the David Traylor Zoo, Lee Beran Recreation Center or Jones Aquatic Center. Fireworks also cannot be shot within 200 square feet of hospital, school or nursing home property lines.
Legal explosives can be purchased and fired off now through July 5. Hours are 10 am to 10 pm for most days. The exceptions are July 3-4, where fireworks can be sold and shot from 10 am to 11 pm.
