Drivers that use the Prairie Street overpass will need to find other routes starting Tuesday.
The overpass will be closed for major renovations. The 30-year-old bridge will have both approaches replaced, as well as patch work, concrete work and a polymer overlay installed.
Traffic to and from the Tyson facility at Sixth and Prairie will not be affected, according to the city.
This could well be a three-month project, weather permitting. Detour routes will be posted at both ends of the bridge, but this will likely increase traffic for West Sixth Avenue from Prairie Street east to Commercial as well as Commercial from Sixth to South. It will also likely increase traffic for Emporia’s downtown underpasses at Mechanic, Congress and State streets.
We’ll keep you updated on the progress on KVOE and KVOE.com. Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods will have a project overview during KVOE’s 8:05 am newscast Tuesday.
