The Emporia Farmers Market discussions with Healthier Lyon County to add new locations across the county is officially bearing fruit.
The Emporia Farmers Market is now taking place weekly in Americus and Olpe. The Farmers Market is using a Blue Cross Blue Shield Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant facilitated by Healthier Lyon County for this expansion, and market coordinator Jessica Hopkins says Healthier Lyon County has been a natural partner with this effort.
Both Hopkins and Healthier Lyon County grant manager Daphne Mertens say the new market locations will let local foods be sold to county residents, and Mertens says the oversight of an established group gives this effort a better chance of success.
Hopkins says there will be an evaluation after the season ends in October, but she says there could be expansions — possibly to a winter season, possibly to other towns.
Markets in Emporia, Americus and Olpe now run through October Americus markets will be 5-6:30 pm every Friday at Americus City Park. Olpe markets are every Monday from 5-6:30 pm on West Bitler Street. Emporia’s markets continue Wednesdays from 5-6:30 pm and Saturdays from 8:30-10 am at the Farmers Market parking lot, Seventh and Merchant.
