The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is gearing up for one of its big summer events Saturday.
The 11th annual Marvin Schwilling Butterfly County is coming. Chief of Interpretation Heather Brown says there can be as many as 100 different kinds of butterflies at the preserve this time of year.
There will be two count periods, with a morning group from 8:30 am to noon and an afternoon count from 1-4 pm. Folks participating need to wear hiking boots or shoes, long pants and a hat, and they should also bring sunscreen, bug spray, a water bottle, digital camera, binoculars and butterfly identification guides.
The preserve’s historic horse-drawn haying and raking demonstrations, called “Making Hay While the Sun Shines,” has been pushed to June 29.
To participate in the butterfly count or if you have questions about both events, call 620-273-8494 extension 0 or email kansas@tnc.org.
