For residents looking to go abroad this summer, their first trip should be to the Lyon County Register of Deeds Office.
Lyon County Register of Deeds Wendy Weiss, a recent guest of KVOE’s Newsmaker has provided information to help make the process simple and smooth. Individuals seeking a passport will need to fill out an application — available at both the Register of Deeds Office at 430 Commercial Street or online at the US Department of State’s website — and return it to the office.
The cost of a passport can vary depending on what you need. For a passport book, the fee is $110 to the US Department of State and $35 to the acceptance office — in this case the Register of Deeds Office. For a passport card, the fee is $30 to the Department of State and still $35 to the Register of Deeds Office. If you require a passport photo there is an additional fee of $15.
Along with the price difference, Weiss explains there are some differences in limitations between a passport card and book.
The passport process can take anywhere between six to eight weeks to be completed so it is strongly urged you do not wait until the last minute.
Weiss believes the office may be on pace to double the number of passports from last year as they have — as of last word — already handled 121 applications this year. The total number from last year was 137.
Walk-ins are accepted at the Register of Deeds office, and operation times are from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Monday through Friday. For more information on all things passports, call the Register of Deeds office at (620) 341-3240.
