The Kansas City Royals avoided the series sweep, Sunday, beating the Minnesota Twins 8-6.
The Royals scored three runs in the second inning, but were shutout until scoring five runs over the seventh and eighth innings. Billy Hamilton, Martin Maldanado, and Jorge Bonifacio each drove in two runs. Bonifacio said it was big to get off to a good start offensively and then finish strong.
Starter Jakob Junis only pitched three and two-thirds innings, but the bullpen strung together five and a third innings of solid relief. Jorge Lopez picked up his first win of the season, and Ian Kennedy picked up his seventh save…despite giving up a run in the ninth.
Kansas City opens a three-game road series in Seattle Monday night. Danny Duffy is slated to get the start against the Mariners’ Tommy Milone. Pregame at 8:30, first pitch at 9:10, on KVOE 1400 AM/96.9 FM.
