Land transactions and proclamations were the main talking points during the Emporia City Commission’s action session Wednesday afternoon.
During the meeting, commissioners approved the sale of a home at 302 S. Congress St. to an interested party for a total of $203,200. The home is a part of the city of Emporia Infill Housing Program which builds affordable housing in the Emporia area.
Three homes will be located in the 302 S. Congress location. Along with the recently sold residence, two additional homes are currently under construction.
Approval was also given for the transfer of two properties to Habitat for Humanity. Habitat is planning to build two new homes in these locations in the coming year.
The properties transferred include vacant lots at 502 State Street and 122 Mechanic. In other business, the commission awarded a bid to Mayer Specialty Services LLC of Goddard for the sewer manhole rehabilitation project.
The work will entail an epoxy being applied to the selected manholes which will stabilize and give them a longer lifespan.
By doing this the city will not have to physically reconstruct each manhole as the epoxy extends its stability. The project will include 679 vertical feet of rehabilitation for a total cost is $55,168.75.
The project has $150,000 budgeted for it. Due to this additional manholes could possibly be added at a later time.
Also during the meeting commissioners approved two separate bids, the first for a power sweeper for the Public Works Center and the second to purchase a mower for the Emporia Airport. A request for ordinance and rezoning of property at 610 Wilson St. and 1608 W. 6th Ave was also approved.
Traci’s Shaved Ice is located at 1608 W. 6th and are looking to expand the business. Currently here is a home at 610 Wilson which the business is seeking permission to remove in order to accommodate their planned expansion.
Ahead of the numerous requests, Mayor Jon Geitz approved and read several proclamations for the month of June in Emporia. These proclamations declared June 8th as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Emporia, June 22 as National Teachers Hall of Fame Day, which coincides with the official induction of the 2019 class. The final proclamation declared June as “Zoo Month” in Emporia. One executive session also took place, no action was taken.
Emporia City Commissioners will meet next Wednesday at 10 am inside conference room 1AB at White Auditorium.
