(MIAA/ESU) Another MIAA Ken B. Jones award winner for Emporia State. Brianna Schmitz becomes the 8 Student Athlete to be honored with the Award that goes to the top female and male student/athletes in the MIAA. Schmitz received the award at Mondays MIAA Honors Ceremony.
This past year Schmitz won the MIAA Championship in the outdoor heptathlon and was named Second-Team All-American after placing ninth in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She earned All-American honors for the Hornets during the indoor season by finishing fourth in the pentathlon at this year’s NCAA Indoor Championships becoming the first Emporia State woman to earn All-American honors in the pentathlon. Schmitz said this past year was to be about having the best year possible.
In the classroom Schmitz graduated with a with a 3.96 GPA in physical education and has a 4.00 in her master’s level program.
Pittsburg States Levi Wyrick was named the MIAA male Ken B. Jones award winner. Emporia States Landon Nault was on 5 finalist for the award.
Also at the MIAA Honors Ceremony two former Hornets were inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame.
Former Basketball player Michelle Stueve Corpening, she is the all-time leading scorer in MIAA History.
Former Softball player Melissa Stevens was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. She is the MIAA’s career leader in wins (103) and strikeouts (1,034).
She is also the only pitcher in MIAA history with 100 wins and holds the Emporia State school record with a 0.89 ERA which ranks ninth in MIAA history.
