The 14th annual Dirty Kanza is now officially off and rolling.
Riders in the signature 200-mile race left Emporia around 6 am, followed by riders in the “half-pint” 100 at 6:30. Riders in the DK50 will start at 8:30 am. The 25-mile community fun ride starts at 9 am, with the high school race taking off at 9:30.
Longtime organizer Jim Cummins expects an amazing day, and a big part of that is the embrace from the community.
Around 3,000 individuals are expected to take part in this year’s Dirty Kanza with riders from all 50 states and 28 different countries.
Close to 80 riders started in the DK XL, the 350-mile behemoth, on Friday afternoon. As of 7 am, Jay Petervary had about 95 miles left before finishing. Petervary also has a roughly six-mile lead on Matt Acker.
