The State Street underpass is closed Thursday.
The city of Emporia says a contractor started the milling and overlay process on State between Second and Fourth around 8:30 am. There is a chance the work may not be finished by 5 pm. If that’s the case, the street will reopen by early evening and then re-close Friday morning to complete the work.
Separately, traffic is now back to normal on 12th Avenue near Emporia State University after an infrastructure project.
Work to connect the area near Schallenkamp Hall to the city’s sanitary sewer network and upgrade the nearby network as needed began May 13. The original plan was to have the street reopened by May 20, but ongoing rainfall and flooding halted the project until recently.
Other sanitary sewer zones on the west edge of Emporia’s downtown also had work come to a stop because of the wet conditions this month. Work will continue until spring 2020, weather permitting.
