The Special Olympics Torch has arrived in Emporia.
Local law enforcement, including the Lyon County Sherrif’s Office and Emporia Police Department, along with law enforcement from Ottawa and the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office led the way through downtown Emporia shortly after 4 pm Wednesday afternoon. Riders and the torch bearer, Coffey County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Supervisor Zack Rogers, were greeted by a large contingent of Special Olympians and their families at Sixth and Exchange upon arrival.
Rogers tells KVOE News he is honored to be able to carry the torch to support Special Olympics and the athletes who compete. He adds the involvement of law enforcement in Special Olympics does not end with the Torch Run.
After an overnight stay in Emporia the torch is set to begin the next leg of its journey at 9 am Thursday morning. The torch will process out of Emporia from the Emporia State University campus south on Commercial street.
The torch will make a brief stop at Hetlinger Developmental Services before heading to Olpe and then to El Dorado. KVOE General Manager Ron Thomas will once again join in the festivities accompanying the Torch Run crew to Olpe for Ron’s Ride.
Donations for Ron’s Ride may be made by contacting the KVOE station at 342-1400. Photos and video from the torch’s arrival in Emporia are available online at KVOE.com.
