The Emporia Police Department is warning residents of yet another phone scam circulating in the KVOE listening area.
According to a press release from EPD an individual claiming to be a representative of Westar Energy has been contacting customers. The individual tells victims they are currently behind on payments and their services will soon be shut off.
The caller then directs victims to purchase a Green Dot prepaid Visa card and use it to make the payment by calling the individual back with the card number. In some cases the individual has recalled victims claiming the payment did not go through and ask them to repeat the process.
Law enforcement reminds individuals that neither Westar or any other legitimate business will ever demand payment through prepaid or gift cars. If you receive calls claiming to be for the collection of payment, threats of suspended services or claims of being a grand prize winner should be treated with suspicion and reported to local law enforcement.
If you receive calls such as this contact the Emporia Police Department at 620-343-4200.
