Cloudy skies couldn’t dampen spirits at the annual Keep it a Safe Summer Thursday evening.
Hundreds of children and families filled Flint Hills Mall to take in all of the offerings for safe fun activities throughout the upcoming summer season. Organizers were pleased with the turnout despite the sudden change of venue for the event.
Unlike year’s past, this year’s KISS moved to the mall from the Lyon County Fairgrounds parking lot due to the heavy rainfall throughout the week. Organizer Rhonda Gordon took time to acknowledge the numerous vendors at the event for their flexibility with the change of scenery.
Gordon adds KISS is a great sampler for the community as it can get children involved in activities that they may continue participating in beyond the summer. Along with the activities and information children also had the option of taking home either a bike helmet package or disc golf package courtesy of the Emporia Community Foundation.
ECF program director Loni Heinen.
The Sadie Jones Trust also contributed to the purchase of the packages. The evening came to a close with an abundance of prizes given away to lucky individuals in attendance.
