The risk of more heavy rain and a round of severe weather is in place through the evening hours.
All severe weather hazards are possible across the KVOE listening area starting by late afternoon, although the main tornado risk lies just west of Emporia. Hail and high winds are the main concerns locally.
The latest episode of unsettled weather comes as flood warnings continue for Chase and Greenwood counties until 10:45 am Saturday. A flash flood watch has been posted for Morris County from 10 am Thursday through Friday morning. Greenwood County is in a separate watch until 10 am. Chase County has now been placed into a flash flood watch until Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, Kansas Highway 99 remains closed until further notice from Emporia’s south city limits to Road 130. There are now other adjustments for the Soden’s Grove area. Here’s Police Sgt. Lisa Sage:
Commercial Street is also closed to thru traffic between Logan Avenue and Soden’s Grove.
Some good news has come out of Chase County as Kansas Highway 177 has fully reopened to traffic in both lanes.

Ag producers have been waiting for their fields to dry pretty much all month long. Lyon County Extension ag agent Brian Rees tells KVOE News there haven’t been a lot of beans planted, but they don’t handle excess water well at all. Corn is in good shape — if it’s upland corn. Bottomland corn is “pretty well done,” and corn producers have to decide by Saturday whether they want to re-plant for crop insurance purposes. It could be a significant amount of time before farmers can plant or re-plant.
Most rivers are in flood across the KVOE listening area.
The Cottonwood is in flood from Emporia west to Cottonwood Falls.
*At Emporia, the river is at 25.46 feet, above flood stage of 20 and down slightly from 25.5 early Thursday. The river could slide gradually below flood stage by Sunday evening. A flood warning is posted until Monday afternoon.
*At Plymouth, the river is at 33.61 feet, above flood stage of 32 feet and down from 33.91 feet Wednesday. The river could still climb to 34.4 feet Friday morning and go below flood stage Saturday morning. A flood warning goes until Saturday afternoon.
*At Cottonwood Falls, the river is at 11.85 feet, above flood stage of 9 feet but below a tentative crest of 13.4 feet Wednesday. The river is falling and should go below flood stage Friday morning. A flood warning is up until Friday night.
The Neosho is in flood from Emporia southeast to LeRoy.
*At Emporia, the river is at 11.9 feet, below both the 19-foot flood stage and tentative crest of 23.04 feet Wednesday. The current forecast has the river rising again back above flood stage to 19.4 feet by Saturday morning.
*At Neosho Rapids, the river is at 26.23 feet, above flood stage of 22 feet. The river is falling now but could climb to 26.9 feet Saturday evening. It may not go below flood stage until early Tuesday.
*At Burlington, the river is at 30.83 feet. Flood stage is 27. The river could climb to 31.2 feet Thursday and hold steady near 31 feet for several days. The flood warning goes until further notice.
*At LeRoy, the river is at 27.18 feet, above flood stage of 23 but below a mark of 28.2 feet earlier Wednesday. The river could hold steady at 27.4 feet, or close to that mark, for several days. The river is in a flood warning until further notice.
After increasing water releases at John Redmond Reservoir at times Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers is now holding the release at 26,000 cubic feet per second — or almost 12 million gallons of water a minute. Flood-prone areas in Burlington and LeRoy in Coffey County and further downstream in Neosho Falls are impassable in several areas. The Red Cross has opened a shelter at the Allen County Community College Red Barn in Iola for residents needing a place to stay. Coffey County residents who evacuate are told to call the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office at 620-364-2123 so authorities can account for those who have evacuated and those who have not.
In other related news, Governor Laura Kelly has adjusted the state’s disaster declaration, adding more counties to the original declaration from May 9. In our area, Coffey County was added, meaning all counties in the KVOE listening area are now covered by the declaration. In all, 43 counties are now included.
