Flooding continues to widen across the KVOE listening area as several rivers go above projected crest levels.
Rivers keep rising across most of the KVOE listening area, keeping Kansas Highway 99 closed from Soden’s Grove south to Road 130 until further notice. This means the Kansas Turnpike floodgates at mile marker 122.5 will remain open until K-99 reopens to traffic.
There is good news north of Emporia, as Burlingame Road has fully reopened to traffic. Highway 99 north of Emporia reopened early Wednesday morning, and Americus Road has stayed open throughout this flooding episode.

The current flooding and potential for more rainfall this week has had an impact on the community calendar. Keep It a Safe Summer is still taking place Thursday, but it’s moving from the Lyon County Fairgrounds to Flinthills Mall. Here’s organizer and spokesperson Rhonda Gordon:
The registration area will be the mall’s center court, and the 2K fun run will now be a fun walk inside the mall. Walk registration will be in the south hallway near the military recruiting station. Organizers have been contacting vendors to let them know of the changes and to reconfigure the vendor map for Thursday’s activities.
The rain has also put a halt on several infrastructure projects in Emporia, notably the downtown sanitary sewer project. City Engineer Jim Ubert says the project has been rained out so far this week, and the rain didn’t help matters earlier this month, either.
On top of that, heavy rain has also put Emporia’s new water tower project in southeast Emporia on hold until things dry out. Repaving Weaver Street continues at this time.
Rivers are flowing at high levels areawide.
The Cottonwood is in flood from Emporia west to Cottonwood Falls.
*At Emporia, the river is at 25.36 feet, above flood stage of 20 and above both the original projected crest of 25.2 feet and a new projection of 25.3 feet. A new crest forecast and projected length of flooding has not been announced. A flood warning is posted until Sunday evening.
*At Plymouth, the river is at 33.71 feet, above flood stage of 32 feet. The river could still climb to 35.6 feet Thursday morning and go below flood stage Friday night. A flood warning goes until Saturday morning.
*At Cottonwood Falls, the river is at 13.2 feet, above flood stage of 9 feet and rising past the original expected crest of 13.4 feet. The new crest forecast is 13.6 feet Wednesday afternoon. A flood warning is up until Saturday morning.
The Neosho is in flood from Americus southeast to LeRoy.
*At Americus, the river is at 25.97 feet, above flood stage of 26 feet and below a tentative crest of 26.47 feet early Wednesday. A warning continues to Wednesday night.
*At Emporia, the river is at 23 feet, above flood stage of 19. The river should climb to 23.3 feet Wednesday morning and go below flood stage Thursday morning. The current warning goes until Thursday afternoon.
*At Neosho Rapids, the river is at 26 feet, above flood stage of 22 feet. The river could get to 28.6 feet early Thursday and go below flood stage Sunday morning. The warning goes until Sunday evening.
*At Burlington, the river is at 29.25 feet. Flood stage is 27. The river could climb to 31.6 feet Thursday morning. The flood warning goes until further notice. The Army Corps of Engineers is increasing its water releases from John Redmond Reservoir. Releases overnight were at nearly 20,000 cubic feet per second. That increased to around 23,400 cfs at 7 am. Another increase is planned at 10 am to 27,300 cfs, with yet another increase at 1 pm to 28,600 cfs.
*At LeRoy, the river is at 27.93 feet, above flood stage of 23 but below a mark of 28.2 feet earlier Wednesday. The river could still climb to 28.4 feet before noon, and additional rises could happen later. The river is in a flood warning until further notice.
This third round of flooding for the month comes after up to 2 inches of rain Saturday and anywhere from 3-8 inches of rain areawide from noon Monday through midday Tuesday. More rainfall is in the picture for the next several days, including Wednesday afternoon and evening.
A flash flood watch affects Coffey County through Thursday morning and Greenwood County from 7 pm Wednesday through 10 am Thursday.
Meanwhile, severe weather is again possible across the area Wednesday. Hail and high wind are the main concerns, with a non-zero chance of a tornado as well.
