With the heavy rainfall throughout the area recently some residents may just now be looking into flood insurance and the Kansas Insurance Department is offering some insight to help you choose the best policy.
Unlike traditional homeowner’s insurance, flood insurance is a national insurance program regulated by the federal government. Despite this, if you are interested in purchasing flood insurance it is recommended to do so through your local insurance agent.
Kansas Insurance Department Director of Government Affairs and Communications Lee Modesit explains discussing and clarifying options with your agent is essential as there are generally two different forms of flood insurance.
Modesit also tells KVOE News it is important to discuss with an agent exactly what information will need to be provided when filing a claim depending on your policy.
Modesit also warns against waiting to the last minute to purchase flood insurance as there is a 30-day waiting period. During this time, any damages to your home or belongings due to flooding will not be covered by your insurance.
Modesit adds waiting is also discouraged due to the fact that flooding emergencies can occur anytime throughout the year.
