KVOE has announced the selection of their 2019 Emporia High School and Area High School Athletes and Coaches of the year.
The Emporia High Athletes of the year are Haylee Weiss and Jace Stewart.
Hayley was a state gymnastics champion, taking first on the floor exercise. She also finished in 2nd place at the state diving meet. She will be attending Ottawa University beginning next fall.
Jace was a member of the Emporia High football, basketball and baseball teams. He will be attending Barton Community College on a baseball scholarship next fall.
Barbara Clark was selected the Emporia High Coach of the year. She is the diving coach. 2 divers advanced to state during the boys season with Reed Slayden winning the State Championship. 3 divers advanced to the girls state meet.
The area high school athletes of the year are Emma Miller of Olpe High School and Montana Giffin of Burlingame.
Emma Miller was a member of the Olpe volleyball and girls basketball teams that both qualified for State. She will be attending Kansas State University next fall, majoring in Ag Education.
Montana Giffin was a member of the Burlingame football, basketball and baseball teams. The Bearcat football team advanced to the 2nd round of the play-offs. Montana will be attending Garden City Community College on a basketball scholarship.
Mike Hevel of Waverly was voted the Coach of the Year. Coach Hevel is retiring after 46 years in education as a teacher, coach and athletic director.
The Emporia High Athletes and Coach of the year were nominated by coaches at Emporia High School. The final vote was done by the KVOE Sports Booster Club.
The Area Athletes were nominated by Area High School Athletic Directors. The final vote was done by Area High School Principals.
The Student Athletes also receive a $300 dollar scholarship.
