Rivers keep coming down across the KVOE listening area, but Kansas Highway 99 remains closed until further notice south of Emporia.
The highway has been closed the past several days due to flooding and it remained closed throughout the weekend to date, despite dipping to 23.94 feet as of 6:30 am Sunday, below the 24-foot mark where the river clears the highway. The Kansas Department of Transportation has not given any indication on when the highway will either partially open or fully reopen to traffic, although the National Weather Service hydrology map predicts the river will come off the highway by mid-morning Sunday.
As of Saturday night, the only other river in flood was the Neosho at Neosho Rapids. The river continues to dip towards the 22-foot flood stage, but it’s still at 25.4 feet and may not go below flood stage until late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
Areas along Interstate 35 and US Highway 50 did not get much rainfall overnight, but more showers fell north and east of Emporia in the early-morning hours with close to 0.40 inches of rain along and near US Highway 56. t’s unclear how that rain could affect Lyon County river readings.
