The Emporia State baseball team will need to work their way thru the consolation bracket of the MIAA tournament after losing to Pittsburg State 5-4 Thursday night.
The Hornets scored a run in the 1st inning, Cooper Minnick scoring on a Connor Hurst single.
Pittsburg State scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning on 3 hits and 1 Emporia State error to take a 3-1 lead. The Hornets retook the lead with a 3 run 3rd inning. Pittsburg State tied the game in the 4th inning scoring a run on 1 hit and an Emporia State error. They broke the tie with a run in the 5th on 2 hits and 2 Emporia State errors. 4 Emporia State errors led to 2 unearned runs. Tanner Cairns took the loss going the distance and set the Emporia State career innings pitched record at 291 innings. The Hornets were scoreless after the 3rd inning and Coach Seth Wheeler said going scoreless the final 6 innings was one of the differences.
The Hornets will try to avoid elimination when they play Missouri Western Friday afternoon at 12:30p.
Fridays game will be broadcast on MIX 104.9.
Missouri Western lost to Central Missouri 5-4.
The other first round games had Central Oklahoma shutting out Lindenwood 3-0.
Missouri Southern shut out Northwest Missouri State 4-0.
Fridays first game has Northwest playing Lindenwood.
Central Oklahoma plays Missouri Southern.
Pittsburg State plays Central Missouri.
