The Emporia Board of Education has a meeting Wednesday night.
The main order of business is a vote on a $78 million bond to fund a lengthy list of facility upgrades and enhancements. A yes vote by the board sets the table for a special bond election, perhaps as soon as Sept. 5. Emporia voters would then have the ultimate say on the future of those improvements.
On KVOE’s Talk of Emporia, Superintendent Kevin Case said the district and HTK Architects did a lot of due diligence to whittle down the potential project list.
This is the first major bond effort for the district since the early 2000s, when Riverside and Timmerman schools were built. The current bond could increase the property tax levy by as much as three mils, but Case says the original project list would have needed around $115 million to fund and would have resulted in a higher levy increase.
In other business, the board will get a data report on Kansans Can outcomes at Emporia High School. They will also discuss calendar adjustments and recommendations for the next two academic years and they may republish the current year budget for the bilingual education fund.
The meeting starts at 7 pm at Mary Herbert.
