The second annual La Grind three day Gravel Stage Race is taking off Friday.
All proceeds from the event go to benefit Handlebars of Hope. The stage race will launch from two different locations with the first stage beginning in Olpe Friday afternoon.
Category A racers will begin launching at 3:45 pm from Olpe High School with a rider taking off every minute. Organizer Mike Wise lays out the schedule for the next two stages.
As it is a stage race, much like the Tour De France, La Grind has several differences from what most residents may have experienced from other races such as the annual Dirty Kanza. Organizer Matt Brown explains one of those key differences is time.
For those who may not be riders, there will still be plenty to do throughout the weekend. Saturday, activities will take place in downtown Emporia from 11 am to 3 pm and will include disc golf rounds, a maze and other activities put on by local organizations including the Emporia Public Library and David Traylor Zoo. Activities will also take place on Sunday from noon to 2 pm.
Organizers are currently anticipating roughly 200 riders to take place in this year’s La Grind. Registration is still open for anyone who would like to participate.
