5:30 am Monday: Flash flood watches announced for all area counties
Powerful thunderstorms brought heavy rain, high wind, small hail and even a brief prospect of a tornado to the area overnight.
Thunderstorms that developed near the Kansas-Colorado border Sunday afternoon entered the KVOE listening area shortly after 1 am. Those storms prompted a tornado warning just east of Emporia and several rounds of severe thunderstorm warnings just south of town. No severe weather has been confirmed at this time.
Heavy rain, however, was widespread:
*KVOE studios: 1.6 inches
*Antler Ridge: 2 inches
*Allen: 1.4 inches
*Reading: 1.75 inches
With more rain — possibly heavy at times — through Wednesday, all area counties are under a flash flood watch to start the week. Lyon and surrounding counties are under three different watches, but all start Monday night and end Wednesday night. A separate flood watch involves Morris and Wabaunsee counties until 7 am Monday.
Numerous power outages were reported at the height of the storm activity. Westar Energy reported over 20 different outages affecting better than 500 area customers at one point. Lyon-Coffey has not announced whether it had any overnight outages. In Greenwood County, the Emergency Management Department reports P Road between 180th and 13th is closed until further notice after power poles were downed across the roadway.
