Emporia Fire handled two small blazes Friday night.
Fire crews went to an alley behind 818 Sylvan for a small waste burn around 8:30 pm. Battalion Chief Rich Gould says the currently-unnamed occupant was tearing down a garage at the back of the property and told firefighters he didn’t realize the fire was not called in to authorities as per city policy.
Crews put the fire out with minimal damage.
This is being listed as an illegal burn because construction waste was involved. Gould says construction waste is illegal to burn in the city limits.
Firefighters also went to Clarion Inn in the 2700 block of West 18th about two hours earlier after a small trash fire developed. Minimal damage was reported. The cause of that fire is still under investigation.
