Investigations continue after a suspicious letter was reported at Emporia High School Tuesday.
The Emporia Police Department, Emporia Fire and Lyon County Emergency Management responded to a hazardous materials call at 11 am Tuesday. EPD Lieutenant Kevin Risley says an examination by the EFD Hazmat team showed there were no signs of hazardous or dangerous materials contained on or within the letter.
He adds the wording of the letter is what raised the suspicions of EHS faculty who in turn reported it to the authorities.
Risley also tells KVOE News there was a name attached to the letter, however, the name of the individual will not be released, unless legitimate threats are found within the investigation. According to Risley there was no immediate threat to faculty, students or the community and no injuries were reported.
USD 253 Community Relations Director Lyndel Landgren has issued a statement for the district, saying: “We want to thank the Emporia police, fire departments and Lyon County Emergency Management for assisting at Emporia High School this morning. It was determined that the letter received posed no threat or danger to our students and staff. We appreciate the partnership we have with our local authorities and the staff who followed our procedures and training.” Further details from the district have not been released.
