Saying it’s time for a new challenge, Susan Brinkman is hoping local voters approve her run for Emporia City Commission after eight years on the Emporia School Board.
Brinkman tells KVOE News this was a good time to seek out a new way to serve the community.
Brinkman is currently the assistant director of Emporia State University’s Center for Great Plains Studies. She also owns Bourbon Cowboy with her husband, Jason, and she says her time as a business owner opened her eyes to what goes into business-related decisions by the City Commission.
Brinkman says jobs, the economy and affordable housing will be her focal points if elected.
Brinkman becomes the second City Commission candidate to file after incumbent Becky Smith did so last week. Bobbi Mlynar and Rob Gilligan are up for re-election and have not announced whether they plan to run for another term.
The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline for the upcoming primary is June 3. If enough candidates file, a primary election will be held Aug. 6.
3:30 pm Tuesday: Brinkman files for Emporia City Commission
An Emporia School Board member has decided to file for a position on a new governing body.
Current USD 253 Board of Education member Susan Brinkman has officially filed for a seat on the Emporia City Commission. Brinkman has served two terms as a member of the board of education.
In addition to her duties on the school board, Brinkman also serves as Assistant Director of the Center for Great Plains Studies at Emporia State University. Brinkman is now the second person to file for a position on the city commission following incumbent Becky Smith who filed last week.
KVOE has reached out to Brinkman for comment. The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is June 3rd and if enough candidates file for election the primary election will be held August 6th.
