The Emporia State baseball split a doubleheader with Missouri Western Friday. Missouri Western won the first game 8-7, Emporia State won the 2nd game 8-5.
In the first game Emporia State had built a 7-0 lead scoring 4 runs in the 2nd ining, 2 runs in the 3rd and a run in the 4th. Missouri Western began their rally with 3 runs in the 6th, 2 runs in the 7th and took the lead with 3 runs in the 8th.
In the second game the Hornets scored a run in the 1st inning. Scored 4 runs in the 6th inning on a Brian Grove solo home run and Connor Hurst drove in 2 runs with a triple. Missouri Western answered with 4 runs in the top of the 7th to tie the game. Emporia State scored a run in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead. Pitcher Drew Scrimsher was able to work out of a 2 on and no outs jam in the top of the 8th and would earn the save.
Brian Grove may have had the defensive play of the game, recording the 2nd out the inning catching the runner at 3rd to far off the base.
Besides the defensive play, Groves home run was his first of the season and he scored the go ahead run in the 7th on a wild pitch after he tripled.
Tyrus Barclay singled in 2 more runs in the 8th inning for the final margin of victory.
Emporia State and Missouri Western wrap up their 3 game series Saturday afternoon with first pitch at 12 noon. The game will be broadcast on MIX 104.9.
