April burn restrictions have started across the Flint Hills, but the Emporia Fire Department says there are separate regulations for residents in the Emporia city limits.
While pasture burning procedures are now adjusted this month through the Flint Hills Smoke Management Plan, changes to city burn regulations aren’t likely to occur. EFD Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says only one type of burning is currently allowed.
The following list comes from the EFD website regarding the specific guidelines for burning within city limits.
Open burning shall not be conducted:
- Between 7:00 pm and 7:00 am.
- When wind speed exceeds 15 mph.
- Within any commercial zone as defined by the zoning ordinances of the city.
- Within 50 ft. from any structure.
- If in an unapproved container less than 15ft from any structure.
The EFD also adds that city fires must be constantly attended, a means of extinguishment must be near, and you must call the EFD before and after. For more information, call the EFD at (620) 343-4230.
