A reported gas leak in downtown Emporia turned out to be a near-miss, according to authorities.
The suspected leak was first reported in the 200 block of Merchant just before 11 am. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says a Westar Energy crew was excavating and found a gas line. Initially, there were fears it was punctured during the digging, so Westar called Kansas Gas.
Emporia Fire serves as automatic aid on gas leak or potential gas leak calls.
Steinlage says there was no sign of gas after an early investigation. No injuries were reported.
