National Red Cross month is coming to a close.
The month of March has historically served as a time for the Red Cross to spread awareness of their organization and the work they do throughout the country. Red Cross Regional Communications and Marketing Director Josh Murray says it also serves as a time of recognition of the work done by volunteers and donors who contribute their time to the mission of the Red Cross.
Volunteers are a vital aspect of the work conducted by the Red Cross, specifically disaster response. According to Murray, on average the Red Cross responds to over 54,000 disasters a year.
The most recent example of the Red Cross’ response work would be the flooding in Nebraska. Murray says the services offered by the Red Cross include helping to find both long and short term lodging during a crisis, providing essentials for those affected and providing long term recovery assistance.
Murray adds they have recently put out a push for additional volunteers to aid with efforts. He says the need for volunteers has risen due to a large number of agencies and departments seeking their assistance.
