The Omaha Storm Chasers walked off with a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in an exhibition game Monday night.
The Royals scored in the top of the 1st. Whit Merrifield scored on a Adalberto Mondesi triple.
The Storm Chasers tied the game in the 4th. took the lead with a run in the 7th. Cam Gallagher drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the 8th for the Royals. The Storm Chases won the game with a sacrifice fly in the 9th.
The Royals were playing a number of their minor leaguers late in the game. The Royals open the season Thursday when they host the Chicago White Sox.
The Royals Monday requested release waivers on outfielder Brian Goodwin, and also selected the contract of first baseman/designated hitter Lucas Duda.
Goodwin, who is out of options, came into camp presumably with the right fielder’s job. But Goodwin, 28, was just 5-of-43 (.116) in the Cactus League.
Duda, 33, was signed as a free agent prior to 2018 and played in 87 games with the Royals last season, hitting .242 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs. He finished the season with the Braves and was in Twins camp this spring before rejoining Kansas City on a Minor League deal on Thursday.
Duda likely will be a candidate to DH and possibly spell Ryan O’Hearn at first base, at least in the early going.
The Royals will announce their 25 man roster on Wednesday. At Mondays game George Brett announced on the scoreboard that Frank Schwindel will make the 25 man roster.
