The director of the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging is more than pleased Lyon County’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program may be restarted soon.
Julie Govert-Walter says the goal is to make the RSVP program “at least as strong” as it was earlier, if not stronger. She said the program is good for county seniors and the community groups they will serve through volunteering, especially in areas including senior hunger, elder justice, social isolation, drug issues, falls prevention, overall senior health issues and law enforcement. Govert-Walter says the social isolation issue will be a top priority with the revived program.
The Area Agency’s involvement developed as Lyon County both relinquished its longstanding grant and solidified a partnership with the Area Agency on many senior services.
On Monday, the Area Agency on Aging announced it had secured funding through the Corporation of National and Community Services. The funding amount and terms of a local match have not been released, but the money will support the program for three years.
For more information or to participate, call the Area Agency at 800-432-2703. Once re-established, RSVP will be part of the services available at the Friendship Center, 221 West Logan.
