The Emporia Recreation Commission is now a partner with Healthier Lyon County as the health agency looks to finalize its network of bike share locations before making a formal presentation to the Emporia City Commission later this month.
At the Rec Commission board meeting Monday night, Healthier Lyon County grant manager Daphne Mertens asked for the partnership, saying the program continues the agency’s mission of increased access to different healthier options across town.
Board members agreed, voting unanimously in favor.
The plan currently has four bikes and five racks available for the bike share, which essentially serves as a checkout program for bikes to be used across town. Healthier Lyon County is providing the funding, but Mertens says the goal is to have the city own and maintain the bikes. The CrossWinds Counseling and Wellness office at 1000 Lincoln is on board, as well as Emporia High School and Logan Avenue Elementary. Plans for a central downtown and eastern Emporia location are still pending.
At this time, no decision has been made on whether bikes will be available for free as part of this program. Mertens is planning to make her presentation to the City Commission on March 27.
Separately, the board heard more about a plan to bring inflatable toys to both the Jones Aquatic Center and the Rec Center’s indoor pool. Sports Supervisor Amanda Gutierrez says this could be a cost-effective way to increase entertainment — and attendance — at both facilities.
Last month, Recreonics equipment was discussed. This month, items from Aflex and Aquaglide were added to the mix. Gutierrez says the decision to get input from more companies was to get more information about what’s available and suitable for the Rec Commission.
A decision may come as part of the Rec Commission’s next meeting April 15.
