A controlled burn became out of control and scorched over an acre of land Monday evening.
Emporia fire crews were toned out to a residence at 2424 Road N for an out of control fire just before 5 pm Monday evening. According to Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage, the residents of the home were burning brome Monday evening when the fire got out of control.
Steinlage says crews had the fire under control quickly, however, roughly two acres of land was burned as a result. The fire came within 20 yards of the home but no damage or injuries were reported. One hay bale was lost due to the fire.
One fire vehicle did get stuck in the field during the response according to Steinlage but was eventually pulled out. Steinlage says he expects this to be a common issue throughout the grassfire season due to the heavy amount of saturation in the ground from recent precipitation.
