Numerous individuals were taken to Newman Regional Health following a single vehicle injury accident on the Kansas Turnpike early Friday morning.
According to the Highway Patrol crash log, prior to 6 am Friday morning, a 2019 Chrysler Pacifica, driven by 26-year-old Cortez Steward-Yancy od Saint Paul Minnesota was travelling southbound at mile marker 143 on the KTA. For unknown reasons the vehicle entered the median striking the barrier wall and entered the right ditch striking a tree.
Steward-Yancy and three other individuals were taken to Newman with suspected minor injuries. A fifth individual was also taken to Newman with what are being called suspected serious injuries.
A sixth occupant in the vehicle was also listed as having suspected minor injuries, however, it does not say if that individual was taken to Newman as well. Both directions of traffic were closed for about 20 minutes from around 6:30 to 6:50.

Emergency personnel were called to southbound mile marker 143 on the Kansas Turnpike, north of Emporia, prior to 6am Friday morning. Both directions of traffic were closed for about 20 minutes from around 6:30 to 6:50.
The Kansas Highway Patrol confirms one person was transported from the scene, by ambulance, to Newman Regional Health in Emporia. Further information is pending.
