David Traylor Zoo hosted the Spring Forward for Amphibians event at the Zoo Education Classroom (ZEC) this afternoon.
Everyone was encouraged to visit the ZEC to learn about what amphibians are, what they do for our environment, the role they play in the ecosystem and much more. Education Coordinator Michelle Sagers explains the vulnerability of amphibians and their special role as an “indicator species.”
Many activities were offered to the participants including arts and crafts, an amphibian life-cycle maze, a scavenger hunt, and some special animals made educational appearances as well. Children and their parents were able to enoy everything that was offered.
Sagers says the time change offered a good opportunity to teach the community about amphibians, as we may be seeing more of them as spring comes around. Sagers also says that there are several things we can do to help them such as conserving water, watching which fertilizers and chemicals we put in our yards, and minimizing pollution.
Next up on David Traylor Zoo’s calendar is the Party for the Planet on April 14th. For more information on the zoo’s upcoming events, visit www.emporiazoo.com.
