A cold shooting night cost the Emporia State womens basketball team in a 61-53 loss to Washburn in the quarterfinal round of the MIAA tournament Friday.
The Lady Hornets shot a frigid 28 percent from the floor while making 3 of 23 three point shots. Emporia State led 15-13 after the first quarter. Washburn led 27-26 at halftime. Lady Hornets led 43-41 going to the 4th quarter. In the 4th quarter Emporia State missed their first 6 shots and were scoreless for over 5 minutes. Washburn went on a 9-0 run to take a 7 point lead and never gave up that lead. Coach Toby Wynn said the missed shots proved costly.
Tyra Jones led Emporia State finishing with a game high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Jessica Wayne added 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Hornets are 22-8. They will have to wait until Sunday to find out if they will receive an at large bid to the NCAA Central Regional tournament.
Washburn will play Fort Hays State Saturday in the semi-finals. In the other quarterfinal game Lindenwood out scored Pittsburg State 54-50. Lindenwood will play Central Missouri in the other semi-final.
