Carol Strickland has been a fixture in Emporia’s education community since the late 1960s, whether through her work as a teacher, adjunct professor or director of the National Teachers Hall of Fame. Now Strickland has been honored as an Icon of Education by Ingram’s Magazine.
Strickland says she was thoroughly surprised when Ingram’s reached out for an interview last month, especially because she thought it was about the National Memorial to Fallen Educators instead of about her career.
Strickland recounted her different education stops during KVOE’s 8:05 am newscast this week.
Besides her teaching career, Ingram’s noted Strickland’s work as Teachers Hall of Fame director since 2012, including expanding induction activities to Washington, D.C., making the Board of Trustees’ membership more national in scope, creating the Inductee Advisory Committee, strengthening the Hall of Fame’s financial stability and developing the Memorial to Fallen Educators.
This is the 10th anniversary of Ingram’s Icon of Education program. Emporia State has two professors named as icons this decade, including business professor John Rich in 2012 and retiring Teachers College Dean Ken Weaver last year.
