The State High School Basketball tournaments are underway.
At the 1A tournament at Dodge City. Waverly advanced to the semi-finals with a 62-46 win over Rural Vista. Waverly jumped out to a 20-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and would never trail. Coach Ty Piper was pleased with the teams defense.
Sara McWilliams was the leading scorer for Waverly with 15 points. Megan Foster added 14 points and Lanie Patterson finished with 12 points. Waverly will play Hanover in the semi-finals on Friday at 3pm.
Hanover out scored Olpe 45-40. Hanover jumped out to a 13-4 first quarter lead. They led at halftime 24-14. Olpe cut the deficit to 3 by the end of the 3rd quarter, 33-30. Olpe struggled offensively making only 1 3 point shot and were 7-18 from the free throw line. Carrie Sleezer was the leading scorer for Olpe finishing with 11 points. Senior Emma Miller said it was not the way they wanted to end the season.
Olpe ends their season with a record of 22-1.
1A Girls first round:
Central Plains 63 South Gray 28.
Thunder Ridge 56 South Central 45
At the 2A State tournament Hutchinson Trinity out scored the Mission Valley boys 49-23.
At the 5A State tournament in the first game McPherson out scored Topeka Seaman 57-41.
In the 2nd game St. Thomas Aquinas defeated Maize South 47-29.
Blue Valley Southwest 36 Goddard 34.
Kansas City Schlagle 69 Wichita Heights 67.
Thursday the Lebo boys play Osborne at the 1A state tournament.
Lebo Coach Dwayne Paul calls making it to state a blessing.
Coach Paul says they will need to be solid defensively.
Tip-off is set for 3pm. The game will be broadcast on Country 101.7FM.
At White Auditorium in 5A play the boys play their first round games.
3pm Maize plays St. James Academy.
Andover Central plays Pittsburgh
Bonner Springs plays Bishop Carroll.
Basehor-Linwood plays Salina Central.
Bonner Springs guard Keyon Thomas is an Emporia State signee.
